2021 Annual Report

More precious than gold

A year in review

... you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Thank you for helping in 2021

Your support made all the difference for persecuted Christians

As the world came out of the COVID-19 pandemic—and some places still endured the costs of the virus—persecution against God’s people soared. We all watched in horror as the Taliban retook Afghanistan; as northern Nigeria endured attack after attack from Islamic extremists; as millions of Jesus followers faced perseuction and discrimination for their faith.

And yet, God wasn’t silent. He wasn’t unaware. And faith grew. The faith of God’s persecuted followers is more precious than gold. And through your support, you helped it shine.

Thank you for never forgetting your sisters and brothers who suffer for following Jesus. You help them be resilient in faith, showing the world that God hasn’t forgotten any of His people.

In 2021, you helped persecuted Christians realize how big the Church really is

As Kouroush walks around the building, he’s clearly proud of how he and his church turned the empty floor into a welcoming place of rest. The facility has a training room that doubles as a church on Sundays, a cafe with a cozy reading nook and a fully stacked kitchen. “We gather here for training, Bible study and to meet each other over tea,” Kouroush explains. This center is much more than a gathering place: It’s a refuge.

The center is intended to be a first stop for Iranian believers after they have fled Iran, a country in which Christianity is largely underground. When Christian converts are caught in Iran, they are often given a choice: Flee, or be sent to prison for an indefinite time period. And so, many cross the border to Turkey. But while Turkey is a safe place to live, life as a refugee is hard and Iranians often feel disoriented and alone.

This was Kouroush’s story, too. So he decided to do something about it. And hence, this center was born, thanks to your gifts and prayers. It’s already changing lives. “We don’t only offer a safe place for believers,” Kouroush says. “We also give them opportunities to satisfy their hunger for the gospel and break chains [in] doing so.”

And Kouroush is so thankful for your support. “We don’t know each other,” he says, “but, because we all follow Christ, we are connected.”

Through your gifts, stories like Kouroush’s happened around the world. Here’s what you did:

Numbers aren’t the only story. It’s also about faith and hope

When Open Doors began planning for 2021, it was hard to know what the world would be like. Our work was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020—closed borders and tightened restrictions made it difficult to rely on strategies that had carried our mission forward for decades. So, we took a conservative approach, planning to do everything we could to reach as many people as we could in the new reality.

But God had other plans.

Instead of the 4.6 million people that Open Doors planned to serve in 2021, the actual number helped was nearly 6.2 million. That’s 34% more than we expected to serve during the year.

Praise God. And thank you.

"Thank you for making it possible for us to stay here and make a living, so we can continue telling more people about Christ."
