As a Believer in Chad, Nene Finds Joy in Her Trials

As a Believer in Chad, Nene Finds Joy in Her Trials

“God has given me grace.”

Nene, a believer in Chad, came to faith in Jesus in an unlikely way. Yet despite the hardships she has faced, her faith is strong. She cannot help but sing praises to the Lord.

Journey to faith

Although she came from a Muslim background, Nene married into a Christian family. Her mother-in-law encouraged her to attend church, and despite some initial hesitation, Nene began attending with her family. Women in her church encouraged her and shared their wisdom.

“Until I came to believe, something that helped me was women that would come to me, wherever I was, and teach me,” Nene shared. “Or there would be a Bible teaching at church. That is what made my faith firm.”

Nene experienced firsthand the words of Jesus in John 13:35: “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” The love that her new Christian friends showed her brought her to faith in Christ.

“I saw Christians have love,” Nene said. “Christians have strength. If you are experiencing something difficult, they will run to you and encourage you. These are the things that made me realize the Word of God was true and that it helps a person.”

Joy in trials

Nene shared that, despite the difficulties she has experienced as a believer in Chad, she has felt the presence of God. She and her husband had four children, but two tragically died. Her husband eventually left the faith and the two separated, leaving her to care for their two surviving children alone. Her Muslim family threatened to disown her if she did not renounce her Christian faith.

“But God is always blessing us,” Nene said. “We eat. We drink. We have community. I thank God so much, because the grace He has given to us cannot be counted. Nothing compares to the good things He has done for us. So I am very happy, because God has not left me.”

When she feels disheartened, Nene turns to the Lord in prayer and feels that her faith is strengthened. She draws hope from Psalm 3 and 30.

“My faith became firm, because I prayed to God,” she said. “When I prayed, God was responding to me. If something becomes difficult, and I am crying while bowed low in prayer, God lifts me. Strength always comes from God, because I know the Holy Spirit is in my life and is not going to leave me.”

Nene began to sing: “Oh God, our Lord Your name is a majestic name,” she sang. “Your name is a majestic name.”

A gift of an audio Bible

For many believers, hearing the Word of God in their native tongue can be an unexpected blessing. Seventy percent of the population of Chad can't read and people speak 100 distinct languages. For some, a solar-powered device that plays the Bible on an SD card may be the only way they can engage with Scripture in their everyday language.

We surprised Nene with an audio Bible for herself and a few to share. Her delight and gratitude to those who help provide these Bibles were palpable. “Thanks so much,” she said. “To those who think of others like this, may God put His blessings on them. All the time, these people are thinking of how to help those who did not learn how to read. May God bless you, too.”

Prayer requests

Ever since she and her husband separated, Nene has been struggling to provide for her family with no employment. She asked us to pray that she can find a job and send her children to school. “And pray that I remain firm in my faith until Christ returns to earth,” she said. Please keep this believer in Chad in your prayers.
