Becoming a believer doesn’t guarantee we won't endure suffering.
Rather than promising us a pain-free life, God offers something better. He gives us the constant presence and comfort of the Holy Spirit, along with the truth of His Word. Scripture is full of encouragement to help Christians find strength and hope during difficult times.

Faith can grow during suffering – and these Bible verses about strength in hard times show just that. God’s promises hold true in tough seasons, and Scripture offers strength during trials. Continue reading below for hope and encouragement from God’s Word.

Encouraging Bible Verses

We are not strong on our own, but God does not call us to be. He asks us to lean on Him as our source of strength, faith, and hope in every season. Our suffering is not meaningless, and we are not alone in our hardships. These verses about courage and trust in God are His promises to us.

Strength in Hard Times

Deuteronomy 31:6
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Isaiah 41:9-13
I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest corners I called you. I said, ‘You are my servant’; I have chosen you and have not rejected you. So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
All who rage against you will surely be ashamed and disgraced; those who oppose you will be as nothing and perish. Though you search for your enemies, you will not find them. Those who wage war against you will be as nothing at all. For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, ‘Do not fear; I will help you’.”

Psalm 46:1
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

Psalm 73:26
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”

Faith in Hard Times

John 14:27
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

Romans 8:35-39
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: ‘For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.’
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that [nothing] in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God.”

1 Corinthians 16:13
Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.”

Hope in Hard Times

2 Corinthians 1:3-4
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Father of compassion and the God of all comfort. Who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.”

Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Isaiah 40:29-31
He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted. But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles. They shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”

1 Peter 5:10
And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ. After you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.”

John 16:33
I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Psalm 23:4
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

2 Corinthians 4:17
This light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison.”

Help persecuted believers remain strong and courageous

We can find strength in hard times with Bible verses that speak encouragement and truth. However, many persecuted believers worldwide cannot easily access Scripture itself, much less encouraging Bible verses for times of persecution.

Global Christian Relief supports persecuted Christians across the globe. We respond to crises with emergency aid, safe housing, legal support, Bibles, and training. We strengthen the Body of Christ where it suffers most.
