How to Advocate for the Persecuted Church (When You Don’t Know Where to Start)

How to Advocate for the Persecuted Church (When You Don’t Know Where to Start)

I still remember the first time I truly saw the persecuted church.

It was more than two decades ago, during my years as a writer traveling through North Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. I met men and women whose faith cost them everything.

One story has never left me: Berhanu, an Ethiopian believer, told me how Communist officials once played Russian roulette with a loaded gun at his head, demanding he deny Christ.

He never did.

I sat across from Berhanu, looking into his eyes as he described that moment. I realized then that my understanding of faith was being redefined. These weren’t just stories of distant heroes – they were living reminders that following Jesus can mean risking everything. Their courage made me want to become a more committed follower of Christ myself.

But when I returned home, I didn’t know what to do with what I’d seen. How could I become an advocate for the persecuted church?

I stayed in ministry, but I lacked the tools to help others grasp the reality of the persecuted church. For years, I carried those stories quietly, unsure how to invite others into them.

That’s why I’m so passionate about what we’re building at Global Christian Relief.

We’re launching a movement – one that gives everyday believers the tools I wish I’d had.

We’re inviting you to become an Advocate.

They pray, they invite others to pray, and they help their communities see the global church as family.

We’ll walk with you every step of the way. We’ll provide you with compelling stories, practical resources, and easy-to-use tools – everything you need to share what

God is doing through His suffering church. You’ll never have to do this alone.

What is an Advocate for the persecuted church?

An Advocate is someone who says a simple yes to God’s call to stand with persecuted Christians. You don’t need to be a public speaker or a theologian. You just need a willing heart.

Advocates share stories – at the dinner table, in small groups, on social media, or even at the local Rotary Club.

I believe this could be the step that sparks revival in the American church – not by exporting our image, but by letting the faith of the persecuted church shape us into the likeness of Jesus.

Imagine what could happen if thousands of Advocates across the country became voices for the voiceless.

All it takes is a simple yes.

At Global Christian Relief, we believe in effective stewardship and transparency for both donors and the persecuted Christians we serve. Our latest annual report, Resilience Magazine, shows how we maximize every dollar to strengthen believers – from freeing families from Pakistan's brick kilns to providing audio Bibles to believers and seekers who cannot read for themselves.
