Easter weekend brought devastation to Nigeria's Middle Belt. Attacks struck Christian communities in Benue, Kaduna, and Nasarawa during Easter services – killing dozens, leaving survivors in shock.
In Benue's Mbalom community, at least 17 believers were killed in an early morning raid. Kaduna saw two separate attacks: gunmen opened fire near churches in Ariko, killing at least 12, while three more Christians were murdered in nearby Maro Kasuwa. Nasarawa reported at least 10 additional deaths.
A local Christian described the fear that had settled over his community: "Everybody here is helpless," he said, pleading for international bodies to "come to the rescue of these innocent people." The attacks came just days after a massacre in Jos claimed 30 lives on Palm Sunday. For Nigeria's persecuted church, the holiest week of the year has become the most dangerous.
Nigeria is now the world's center of Christian martyrdom. Families are counting losses. Believers are afraid to go back home. Communities are still searching for people abducted during the chaos.
Jesus promises that He is near the hurting church in Nigeria: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28)
The Nigerian church is weary. Pastors are carrying their own grief while trying to hold their congregations together. Pray now – asking God to show up where He is most needed.
Bring Nigeria before the Father:
- Pray for the grieving. Ask God to be near families counting unbearable losses. Pray for pastors carrying their own trauma while shepherding their people through shock and sorrow.
- Pray for the wounded and traumatized. Intercede for healing and medical care. Pray for the doctors and volunteers providing it.
- Pray for protection and courage. Ask God to guard families and communities still living in fear. Pray that believers would find the nerve to gather, worship, and witness – even now.
- Pray against retaliation. Ask the Spirit to restrain revenge and build something across these communities. Pray for leaders on all sides to choose protection over escalation.
The Nigerian church isn't hiding. They're still meeting. They're still worshiping. Pray that the global Church meets them there.
