The Church in Syria mourns and prepares for more attacks

The Church in Syria mourns and prepares for more attacks

One of the worst attacks on Christians in Syria in recent years has left families grieving, churches on alert, and the global Church called to pray.

Days ago, a suicide bomber targeted a Christian church in Damascus during an evening worship service. Gunfire followed the explosion. The attack left 20 Christians dead and 52 more wounded.

Now, a direct update from a trusted partner inside Syria reveals the scope of the threat is even greater than initial reports suggested.

Growing threats against the Church

According to the partner, five churches in Syria have been specifically named and threatened by extremists. Social media posts have circulated, warning of further violence—some naming exact congregations expected to be attacked this coming Sunday.

One of the targeted churches is especially personal to the partner, whose father serves in that congregation. Two members were killed in the bombing. One grieving father lost all three of his sons—young men who reportedly confronted the attacker moments before he detonated the bomb.

In a nearby village, four more believers were killed while attending the same memorial service. The attacker, reportedly of Pakistani origin and living in Syria, struck just as the community gathered to mourn a recent loss.

“We are praying earnestly that the Lord would strengthen and uphold His church in Damascus,” the partner shared. “May every scheme of the enemy be exposed and undone.”

A critical moment for Syria’s Christian community

Beyond the immediate devastation, this attack underscores a larger crisis facing Syria’s Christian population. Our partner warns that without international support or protection, the Church in Syria may not survive the next five years.

That warning comes from a country where the gospel has been proclaimed since the days of the early Church. Syria has long been a place of deep Christian heritage and witness. But now, believers face what may be the most dangerous period in the Church’s history there.

How you can pray

The Church in Syria is asking for your prayers. Here’s how you can stand with them right now:

Pray for grieving families.
Ask God to comfort those mourning, including the father who lost his three sons during the attack.

Pray for protection over churches.
Extremist threats continue to circulate. Pray for God’s covering over congregations—especially as they prepare to gather again this Sunday.

Pray for Muslim-background believers (MBBs).
These Christians face heightened risks in this season. Pray for courage, peace, and protection.

Pray for global advocacy.
Ask God to raise up international voices who will speak out on behalf of the persecuted Church in Syria.

“They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God.”John 16:2

Even in sorrow, the Church in Syria is standing firm in faith. Let us stand with them—in prayer, in solidarity, and in hope.
