Returning to Mar Elias: How Your Support Is Helping a Bombed Syrian Church Recover

A few months ago, we visited Mar Elias Church in Damascus in the aftermath of the June massacre to hear from survivors and see how we could help. When we returned to the church in February, we saw the impact of supporters' kindness everywhere. Not just in the drywall and plaster of the renovations happening, but in the renewed hope on survivors' faces.

Standing with Father Boutrous inside his sanctuary, mid-renovation, the smell of fresh paint and planks was a tangible reminder of the Church's support at work. We let him know that we had been praying for him that his congregation was not alone.

While he'll always carry the weight of what happened in his heart, he also gets to carry the love from across the world that was rallied for his church.

His message for you: "Thank you for your love."

What Our Supporters Have Accomplished

Thanks to our generous supporters:

  • 25 children affected by the attack have received trauma care
  • 5 Christian families who lost their breadwinner have started small businesses
  • 894 families across Syria received seasonal care packages at Christmas
  • 1,533 families received emergency food and hygiene kits

Rana's Story: From Devastation to Dignity

Our supporters showed up in a significant way for Rana, a young widow who lost her husband in the bombing. In an instant, she lost her life partner and became the sole provider for her three-year-old son, elderly mother, and disabled in-laws. The loss and uncertainty were overwhelming.

But with support from our Church family, Rana was able to open a small grocery shop. Between her retail experience and her mother's baking skills, she was able to create a stable source of income for her family.

Opening her shop has given Rana renewed confidence and a sense of purpose. By serving her neighbors daily, she quietly demonstrates that the Christian community is choosing to remain, rebuild, and move forward.

Why This Matters for Syria's Future

This is the ultimate result of your support. Families who felt they had no choice but to flee Syria –  where Christian presence has continued to shrink can stay, rebuild, and serve their communities with dignity and purpose.

Kids are getting help for wounds we can’t always see. And the Church can keep standing because we refused to look away.

Recovery after persecution like this takes years. With continued support, Christian families can rebuild, stay rooted in their communities, and pass their faith on to the next generation.
