A Tale of Two Bibles

Premium Bibles are having a moment. The New York Times recently reported on the rise of luxury editions – hand-bound, printed on French-milled paper, wrapped in European calfskin – with some selling for $350 to $400. It's part of a broader renaissance, as publishers see growing demand from believers who want Scripture that feels as weighty in their hands as it does in their hearts.

That impulse is a good one. But it points to something worth exploring – that 100 million people around the world do not have access to the transformative Word of God.

This confronts us with a question: What are we willing to do about that fact?

What is a Bible worth?

In one world, the question is which Bible. In Aurelio's world, the question was whether he'd ever encounter one at all.

Aurelio lives in the mountains of Chiapas, Mexico. He's one of roughly 100 million Christians in 88 countries who can't freely read Scripture in their own language. He couldn't read at all.

For years, he carried anger the way other men carry tools. He drank. He fought. He believed in revolution as a solution to injustice. But something shifted when he encountered Jesus.

His conversion changed everything. The anger didn't vanish overnight, but slowly God changed his life. He left behind the life he'd known and found refuge in a community of believers who welcomed him and helped him heal.

But without the ability to read, how would he encounter God's Word?

GCR's partners on the ground gave him an audio Bible in Tzotzil, his heart language. Now, as he cuts wood in the mountains, Scripture plays alongside him – the Word of God becoming the soundtrack of his labor.

It wasn't a purchase. It was access. And it became the most valuable thing he owns.

You measure something’s value by what you’re willing to give up for it. If you’ve followed GCR for a bit, you may remember the story of Azad and Isaac who risk their lives to bring God’s Word to people who need it.

Or maybe you remember the story of Amina, the single mom whose audio Bible has become a lifeline in the country of Chad.

For Aurelio, Azad, Isaac, or Amina, the value of the Bible they hold isn’t tied into its beauty. They’ve come to recognize this truth: "How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!" (Psalm 119:103)

A Bible's True Measure

A Bible's worth goes well beyond its craftsmanship. Your copy of God's Word might look beautiful. It might take people's breath away when they see it sitting on a shelf. It may last for untold generations to come.

Yet the most significant way to measure the worth of the Bible is in its ability to touch the heart of people like Aurelio. The author of Hebrews writes, "For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart." (Hebrews 4:12)

That 100 million people around the world do not have access to the transformative Word of God should break our hearts.

Treasure your Bible. Invest in one that lasts. But don't stop there. A faith that values the Word should also be a faith that shares it.

The numbers make this real: A single luxury Bible costs $400. For that same amount, GCR can place Scripture into the hands of 80 believers who have never owned one.

Meeting believers like Aurelio should deepen our appreciation for Scripture.

But it also confronts us with a question.

What are we willing to do about the fact that 100 million Christians are still waiting?
