Urgent: Suffering Christians in Gaza risk starvation and extinction

August 2, 2024 by Abigail Hart in Christians in Gaza

Could Christians in Gaza truly become extinct?

Bordered by Egypt and Israel, Gaza’s populace includes just 1,000 minority Christians living among 2 million Muslims. Consider the disparity in these numbers for a moment.

Sadly, the small size of the Christian population has been further reduced by the regional conflict; the threat of extinction is, in fact, a serious risk. Michael Azar, a professor of theology and religious studies in the US, says, “The fear of [Christianity in Gaza] being erased is very real.”

And today, displaced Christian families are facing an unprecedented crisis: no homes, food or clean water. As such, if the present situation continues unabated, Christianity could cease to exist in Gaza. But the Body of Christ can take collective action now to ensure the church is strengthened, sustained and preserved.

Destruction of the infrastructure has led to displacement, and tents are urgently needed for shelter.

Churches in Gaza have been destroyed

Religious buildings in Gaza have been caught in the crosshairs of war. Some Christians in Gaza had sought temporary solace in a historic church dating back to the 12th century, but had to evacuate after the house of worship was badly damaged. Watch the video above to learn more about this heartbreaking experience.

Regionally, the northern part of Gaza is particularly hard-hit and struggling with a vast lack of essential supplies as the infrastructure collapses. Farm lands lay in waste and supply chains have been disrupted, triggering food scarcity.

Hungry Christians in Gaza lack access to clean water and food is increasingly difficult to come by. At-risk families fear starvation.

A track record of supporting Christians in the Middle East

Are you wondering if your gift will actually reach believers in need? The answer is yes. Global Christian Relief and our partners on the ground operate a trusted network in the region. Just last year, when a major disaster occurred in the Middle East, we responded within 24 hours, supplying emergency relief to over 10,000 displaced Christians, including warm clothes, hygiene products, food relief, water, blankets, mattresses and more. We then provided long-term relief in the form of container homes. Additionally, we supply Bibles and other critical resources to marginalized believers in the Middle East, translated into their local language.
