Millions go hungry amid Afghan food scarcity

November 16, 2023 by Abigail Hart in Middle East

Over two years after the United States withdrew from Afghanistan, the Middle Eastern nation is struggling under Taliban rule. The economy is currently in tatters and millions are going hungry due to Afghan food scarcity—both Christians and Muslims alike.

Compounding the issue, Pakistan plans to deport 1.5 million Afghans who had previously fled their homeland due to war, famine and persecution. That means the dwindling food supply in Afghanistan will be stretched even thinner, leaving countless families struggling to survive.

Nearly 200,000 people residing in Pakistan have already arrived back in Afghanistan and thousands more will soon follow—people with no homes, jobs or food. And temperatures are set to dip below freezing in the near future.

You can help suffering Afghan families through a gift to Global Chistian Relief.

Alongside our partners, the team at Global Christian Relief is actively addressing the issue of Afghan food scarcity. Specifically, we’re supplying Afghan families with emergency food relief kits, mobile medical care, agricultural livestock, blankets for winter and more.

But with the surge of Afghan migrants forced to return home, the support of the Body of Christ is absolutely vital at this moment.

Your gift to Global Christian Relief could help someone like Kaamil*, who used to cut timber before the Taliban assumed control. He shared his struggle with our team:

“The Taliban has restricted us from cutting wood … Because of this, we have no income, and our needs are great. I want to work, but there is no economy, no work to be found. Our family is hungry and needs help. We don’t receive any assistance from the government … we are on our own and desperate.”

A $25 contribution could protect a vulnerable Afghan family from disease by supplying a hygiene kit, while $57 could provide medical treatments for those who are sick. Meanwhile, a $100 gift could sustain hurting Afghans with an emergency food relief kit for several months.

Please join us in fervent prayer for these vulnerable families—fathers, mothers and children—who have nowhere else to turn amid the growing crisis of Afghan food scarcity.

Heavenly Father, the situation in Afghanistan is on our hearts and minds today, and we ache for the Afghan people—both Christians and Muslims—who are suffering greatly. We pray that You would restore the economy so that the fathers and mothers can find meaningful work and fair wages to feed their hungry families. Comfort and sustain them during this dark time in their nation’s history. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

*Please note: A representative name has been used to preserve Kaamil’s security and anonymity.
