Persecuted Christians in India rocked by violence

May 8, 2023 by Abigail Hart in Persecuted Christians in India

“The violence has led to thousands of people, mostly Christians, fleeing their homes and businesses. Leaders in the area have said that church burnings are the result of the growth of Hindu nationalism among the dominant Meitei community,” an on-the-ground Global Christian Relief field partner said. “This tension has been exacerbated by the political influence of the Hindu nationalist organizations Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which have sought to promote their faith as the dominant religion in India.”

The Meitei community shares a border with Myanmar, so it’s made up of many religions. But the number of Christian Meiteis has spread rapidly, and the Hindu-practicing Meiteis are desperate to gain control.

Christianity Today (CT) reported that close to 7,500 believers were evacuated by the Indian government for their safety … and they don’t know when they’ll return.

Our family in Manipur are in desperate need of our prayers. They are without food, without water—without homes. Please join us in praying for them:

Father God, we lift up these Meitei believers to You. Protect them as they’re evacuated to a safer place. Give them strength to put their hope in You and not in their circumstances. May this situation equip them even more to shine their light in this dark region.
