Russian church leader slain in extremist attack

June 24, 2024 by Chandler Peterson in Persecuted Christians in Russia

On June 23, armed men barged into a church in the city of Derbent, setting a fire and killing 66-year-old church leader, Nikolai Kotelnikov.

While that assault unfolded, another church attack was taking place just 75 miles away in the city of Makhachkala. Local residents were forced to seek shelter as gunfire was heard throughout the evening.

According to Russian authorities, at least 46 people were injured while 15 police officers and 4 civilians were killed. Additionally, at least 5 attackers were dead.

“This is a day of tragedy for Dagestan and the whole country,” said Sergei Melikov, a Russian leader in charge of the region. In a show of support, he traveled to the city of Derbent today in order to meet with congregants at the church that had been under siege just 24 hours ago.

Some media outlets reported that the war in Ukraine has left local Russian cities vulnerable, as many police officers have been sent to the frontlines.

Join us in praying for our brothers & sisters in Christ in Russia as they grieve the loss of the Russian church leader slain in this attack. Pray for healing from injuries and comfort for those who mourn. Pray for protection from further harm. And pray 1 Peter 3:14 over these believers, which says, “But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.”
